FAQ
A neurologist is a medical doctor specializing in diagnosing and treating disorders of the nervous system, including the brain, spinal cord, and nerves.
You should consider seeing a neurologist if you experience headaches, neck or back
pain, seizures, dizziness, numbness, tingling, muscle weakness, abnormal body
movements, speech problems or memory problems.
It depends on your healthcare provider and insurance plan. Some require a referral
from your primary care physician. In India a referral is usually not required.
Neurologists treat various conditions, including:
o Brain diseases
o Epilepsy
o Headache and migraine
o Parkinson’s disease
o Peripheral neuropathy
o Sleep disorders
o Spinal cord conditions
o Stroke
o Vertigo
o Neck and Back pain
o Multiple sclerosis
o Dementia and Alzheimer’s disease
o Fibromyalgia
o Muscle diseases
Treatments depend on the specific condition but may include medications, therapies,
certain devices and in some cases, surgical referrals.
Epilepsy is diagnosed using tests such as EEG and brain imaging. Treatment often
involves medications to control seizures, lifestyle adjustments and rarely surgery.
Management strategies include identifying triggers, medications, lifestyle changes,
and preventive therapies.
Parkinson’s disease is a progressive neurological disorder affecting movement.
Treatments include medications, physical therapy, and, in some cases, deep brain
stimulation.
Peripheral neuropathy involves nerve damage causing weakness, numbness, or
pain. Treatment focuses on managing symptoms and addressing the underlying
cause.
Sleep disorders are diagnosed through sleep studies and evaluations. Treatments
may include medication, therapy, or lifestyle changes.
Treatment may involve physical therapy, medications, and pain management
techniques tailored to the specific spinal cord issue.
Seek emergency medical attention immediately. Symptoms include sudden
weakness, speech difficulties, and loss of balance. Timely intervention is critical.
Vertigo treatment depends on the cause. Vertigo testing is done to ascertain the
cause. Treatment may include medications, physical therapy, or specific manoeuvres to address inner ear issues.
